Section outline

  • Towards the end of the 18th century , the French population started protesting against their king, Louis XVI. The French Revolution brought down the king and turned France into a republic - a country ruled by the people.

However, the newly formed state lasted only for a short time, until Napoleon Bonaparte became France's ruler. The ideas of the French Revolution spread to many countries around the world.
